Gastronomy and local life

Madrid's food scene is a map of all Spain. In the Mercado de San Miguel, classic tapas share space with natural wines and freshly shucked oysters. A Sunday at El Rastro is not just antiques — it is also a morning vermouth crawl from La Latina to Chueca. Malasaña and the Barrio de las Letras host the city's new informal dining scene, where small restaurants are reinventing the traditional taberna. The Mercado de Antón Martín, Vallehermoso and Barceló are three less-touristed, more authentic market stops where locals shop every week.
